I have over 154,000 miles on it. Recently had a water pump and thermostat changed (believe it or not, first major repair ever for this car). Gradually over time–since it has hit 100,000 miles–the gas mileage has become worse. Now I can only go about 120 miles on 1/2 tank. When the dealer changed out my water pump and thermostat, I had them check all the other components and they found nothing wrong besides the car’s advanced miles to indicate why the gas mileage is horrible. Is it because my car is getting old? Other than this, I have been very satisfied with this car.
I drive 60 miles round-trip to and from work each day, 55 to 60 MPH on cruise on a straight highway.
This car was a gift from my dad, and I do not want to disappoint him by parting with it early and getting another car; I want to drive it until it poops out or until it becomes too expensive to repair.
This car still has the original factory alternator.
-1990 Honda Accord LX
-Sedan
- Curb weight 2,728 lbs (according to Wiki)
-2.2 L, DOHC, I4 125 HP (back then)
-Most gas mileage websites say 24 city 30 highway (which will probably be a bit less 20 years later)
-It has 215k miles on it with a used tranny and a new recent water pump/battery; everything else is bone stock.
Now, although the tank is 17 gallons, when the gauge has reached empty I’ve generally used 14-15 gallons (safety measure I would assume, because when I fill up on E I’ve never seen it pass 14.5 gals or so). So therefore we can say that half a tank according to the gauge would be 7.5 gallons.
Hello, i have tried everywhere else, with no luck maybe someone here can help, the topic pretty much states it all, with a few things been replaced, timing belt replaced, water pump, power steering pump, alternator, and clutch all replaced, o2 sensor replaced and a few other odds and ends, heres where it gets tricky, i get about 200 miles to a tank of gas if im lucky, when im at the pump, im lucky to squeeze 19 dollars in when the fuel light comes on…gas here is 2.26 a gallon, so a little bit of math will tell you i have about a 10 gallon tank, however my moms neon ( 96 neon sport ( same submodel as mine forogt to mention that in above ) 2.0 DOHc auto) and she fills up with about 14 gallons of gas, and gets about 300+ miles to the tank, and i cant figure out why i am getting such crappy mileage, why im here can anyone tell me where the Oil Sending Unit is on my make/model of a car??…thanks for anything in advance
no cam timing is dead on, no misfire at all, timing light says the same, if anything the car is a peak tighter and more responsive since i switch to the bosh platinum 4′s plugs, and a AEM CAI, but even before no, no notable loss in power
Is there a gasket between the fuel injection and block that could leak through into the oil? I cannot afford a head gasket at the moment and am wondering what my options are for this fix.
Sorry for lack of info. It is a 3800 Buick Regal Limited, has 220k on it. This has been the best car ever for many years for me and I really want to fix it rather than toss it to the scrap yard. Not sure on the fuel pump, I will look into that now.
I certainly hope that is the case, as that is something I can do more than likely with my limited tools and knowledge from the net. Thank for your timely response.
and van is jerking not severly no loss of power engine runs great no ticking or whinning. I checked all the fuses nothing blown. air filter could be changed but nothing serious. Spark plugs changed about 6 mons ago (in Jan or Feb) I did fill up on gas at Wal Mart and the next day it started doing this. Wondering if water is in gas never had this problem with Wal Mart gas before. If so how do I get water out of gas w/o draining gas out. One thing I did do was, while husband was in store for about 1 hr we ran van and the a/c but it seemed fine. When we left van was running fine did not over heat(I watched gages to make sure). Other than this van is great! Pls help we don’t know what to do starting small hoping that will help
UpDate: We just took the van to Advanced Auto and they said it is a company that sells gas for 3 cents cheaper than the rest of the gasoline companies(if you guess what I’m getting at). That it will cloge your hoses up quicker than any thing out there. No codes came up, as to any thing wrong with the van
I’m speaking of the automatic models BTW. I’m way too tall for a Civic, but does the gas mileage of the Civic blow the Accord’s out of the water? I’m one of those gas saving nuts who can’t stand getting less than 30 mpg EVER or shelling out an outrageous amount of money for an overrated hybrid.
I’ve already checked over at fueleconomy.gov and a lot of 4 cylinder Accord owners are reporting an average of 23-26 mpg combined. That’s way too damn low for a 4 banger. Something just doesn’t sound right.
I mean, every suv I see and compare, gets the same gas Mileage of 13 to 21 mpg or combined of 15 to 19. Why does every car maker has the same mpg, but in different suvs. I mean, I like suvs, but they drink gas as if it were water. why don’t car manufacturers make suvs that get higher mpg in the high 20s to high 30s, Any thing besides the hybrid suvs.I just want a regular suv that gets at least 33 ctiy and 42 highway mpg. Is that to much to ask for, from you car manufacturers. Enough of this 12 to 18 mpg crap. give us higher mpg suvs!
I just love suvs but, gas Mileage sucks balls. Maybe I want a little to overboard with the mpg 33 and 42. just 23 or 30 mpg sounds just fine, for a suv.
i have a crossover suv it has better gas mileage than a hummer or bronco or expedition but it is still a lot lower than some of the newer cars out now at 22 mpg highway and 117-18 city thats not that much but for a suv it is ,but with gas priced going up and my long commmute for work ? (i have a long commute for work now until i leave town just dont know when ill leave town or get a shorter commute for work) so my question is in the meantime while i have this commute are there some tips or tricks i can do to get maybe 20 mpg in the city or 24 mpg on the highway etc ? what can i do to increase my mog in a crossover suv , (i know suvs is not the way of the future ,hybrids are out ,hydrogen, electric cars run on a batterys charge and all) while i do not have the better mpgs id argue that i have more power and torque ,and better safety incase of a crash. but like i said eventually i will get a prius or the new honda that runs on hydrogen or the jetta or golf tdi but in the mean time while i still have this longer commute what are some tips i can try thanks
