Over the years, the various vehicles I’ve had, a drop in gas mileage has been the first indicator of a bigger problem. My first car went from 25 mpg to 8 mpg, when I noticed I had a leak in the gas line. my next car would routinely drop from about 20 city/25 hwy to about 15 for either when it needed the timing belt, or spark plug replaced. So I began taking my car to my mechanic friend any time I noticed a drop in my gas mileage. He has since moved, and I don’t trust regular mechanics (got charged $300 to replace a water pump and timing belt; they replaced it with junkyard parts, skipped town by the time I found out); plus I’m broke.

I have a 1989 Ford Taurus with the 3.0L Vulcan V6 and the AXOD Auto transmission. I have 98’200 miles on my car. For quite a while I have been getting terrible gas mileage. I usually get around 12-14 mpg in the city. Now, my car runs in tip top shape. It has been very well maintained by my parents for the past 20 years of their ownership and I have kept it very well maintained for the past 3 years.

I have been thinking about getting a new car for next year. What brands are getting the best gas mileage? What should I look for? I already have a 1998 Subaru Outback with 133000 miles on it. Now needs new heads and water pump.
Thanks,

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 truck which eats gas like I drink water. What can I do to increase gas mileage and make my money last longer? I mean, I have heard a little bit about catalytic converters can decrease your gas mileage if you take them off. Is this true? If it even is, how much money and gas can you actually save? I mean, I know gas has gone way up, but I would like to know all I can do to decrease the amount of gas used up in my truck so fast. Suggestions and help?

1995 Ford Ranger
2WD Automatic regular cab
I bought it used with 183,000 miles and I originally never got any less than 25-26 MPG with a combination of 50/50 city and highway driving. The Ranger currently has 224,000 miles and now I’m lucky if I see 18-20 MPG highway. Why is this? It can’t be due to high mileage because again I bought it with high mileage in the first place.
I’ve replaced the EGR valve, water pump, heater control valve, timing belt, serpentine belt, fuel filter and nothing helps. My tires are all properly inflated as well. Could it possibly be the o2 sensor? I’ve never had that changed before. Any ideas? 18-20 MPG is V6 territory for crying out loud.

I just bought a used 2000 Honda Civic Si with 113,000 miles for $5000. I just had the timing belt and water pump changed. Civics have the reputation of lasting forever but I’m wondering does that apply to the Si model since it is a little different? Also, I know they’re supposed to get 26-30 or so MPG… Is this everyone’s experience that has owned one, or is there anyway that I can try to squeeze a few more MPG’s out of it? Thanks.

I’ve seen floating around the net some who claim that electric load from an alternator can ‘slow’ the engine by increasing resistance. In my education, I never knew there was any physical resistance offered by an alternator. Can someone explain in detail? I am looking into hydrogen use to boost fuel economy. I have seen lots of posts saying it isnt worth it if you are still burning gas, but if I can save a few dollars in gas a week it would be worth it to me.
help!
Greybear, im not talking conversion, im talking supplementing a gas vehicle with hydrogen on the side.

I’ve had the car for a year…. Earlier this summer the Water pump went out, taking the timing belt and 16 valves with it. I had everything replaced, and when I got the car back it became evident that my car went from getting 70 miles per quarter tank to about 40 to 50. The Check engine light came on a few times, and I found it to be the EGR valve (but I looked under the hood and a few vacuum lines were undone, so i reaffixed them). The check engine light went off after doing that. What could be causing my Gas to drop 20 to 30 miles per quarter (80 to 120 mile per tank)?

Currently driving a 2000 Chevy Malibu LS with almost 157,000 miles on it. Have had phenomenal luck with it so far and plan to drive it until repairs get too expensive or it goes out for good (only major thing to go wrong is water pump wore out and needed to be replaced). Otherwise, I do all the routine maintenance on it.
However, I know at some point in time I’m going to need another car. With gas prices increasing, I need something real economical. I’m looking into a Chevy Aveo or something similar to get really, really good gas mileage. (I drive 60 miles to and from work each day on a highway, on cruise control).
