I have a 2004 searay sundeck. 5.0 mercruiser with alpha one outdrive. I just pulled the fuel water separator to check for water. Replaced it and boat would run for a minute or so and then die. Did that 3 times and now it wont fire at all. I wonder if its not getting gas. Any suggestions?

I am looking for a boat that can seat 6 people. No big water. Just Erie canal use. Looking for an outboard aluminum boat for short cruises up and down the canal with the family. I have no clue as to MPG on any style of boats.

I just recently discovered that the reason my motor kept quitting on me the first time out was due to water in the gas. I had siphoned out some gas from the bottom of the can as suggested and it wasn’t long and you could clearly see a separation of gas and water in the jar. I am going to dump all of that gas out of the can and dry out the can the best I can. When I add fresh gas to the can should I add anything to the gas? I thought I heard of something that was added to the gas for outboard motors because of the ethanol that is in the gas is hard on them. Any help on this?

I took my Larson 26 footer (2001) out of storage last week. I replaced the impeller and put a new battery in, and it started up great. Took it down the river without a problem for 30 minutes. After than, I filled the tank. A couple days later I took it out for a longer run including going through a lock before making my way to Lake Michigan. It ran fine until I got out of the lock. I opened up the engine to about 40 mph to get around a tugboat and the engine just stopped. Cold. Panic set it. I tried to restart it but it sounded like was flooded, not an electrical issue. After a few tries it got going but that was it for my big trip. We made it back to the lock slow without incident. However, once I got out I brought it up a little faster only to have it die once again. It was harder to restart this time. Made it a few more minutes before it died although I was just crawling along. This went on until I made it back to my dock. The next day, I changed the fuel filter (it looked clean), added a fuel stabilizer and started it up. It ran for a while out of gear and died. And then it ran a longer time including at high RPMs but now I am afraid to take it out. What on earth could this be? The carb? Bad fuel? Thanks in advance.
Guys, thanks so much. I am going out today or tomorrow to see if the new filter and additive made any difference. However, since water is never going to burn, if there is water on the carb, how do it get rid of it? Do I have to pay the mechanic to do a complete rebuild? That would be expensive and timely. Thanks again.

I went to look at a boat today. I connected the fuel line to the outboard motor and squeezed the pump until it reached full pressure and there was (10 year old??) stale gasoline in the fuel line. I cranked the key and the engine turned over but didn’t start. Then I tried starter fluid.
The boat was sitting for years so I had to pull the battery out of my car to crank it over at all. It cranked over very easily. The engine is mechanically sound.

Okay I am a new boat owner of a 1980 Imperial 17′ boat. I know the engine is 120 hp and can tow people for tubing and so on. But I went to the gas stations to fill it up for the first time and only got like 5 gallons in it and then it started coming out of the vent on the side of the boat? Is this a small tank only 5 gallons or is something wrong? Second i got the boat in the water and it start but when I ran the pump gas was coming out of that also? And to top it all of my gauge for my gas does work how do i fix it?

I’m considering buying a boat that’s been sitting for 10 years, there is stale gasoline in the tank. I figure I can take the gasoline to a local hazmat disposal place. After I empty it, what can I do to clean out the gas tank so it won’t get any gunk or water in the carb after I get it all cleaned out and get the boat running?
