We can prime the carbs with starter fluid and it starts and runs good. Also, it is now doing something odd when out on the water. If you are at full throttle for a bit, it will just vut out on you and shut down too. You have to reprime with starter fluid also in that case. What do you think could be the cause? Fuel pump? Fuel Filter? Something else?

I have a yamaha 50 hp outboard motor. It has been sitting up for a while but before that it ran fine. The only time I can get it to start up is when I take the spark plugs out and spray some carb cleaner in the holes. I dumped out the old gas and put some new gas in it. I also changed the fuel/water filter. All it does is crank but it wont turn over. The last time I did run it on the water I did have some problems when I would try to put it in gear from idol position and it would keep killing on me so i just figured it was a little water in the gas. I was told to clean the carberator out but im not exactly sure where to start. Or maybe its not getting fuel? any help or ideas would be great.

I have changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, and put water remover in gas tanks. The problem occurs on both fuel tanks. It runs perfect on cold engine for first 2 to 5 miles, so it appears to be heat related. The severe miss occurs at cruise speed, stop and go driving, and up hills, but will straighten out while under full throttle. It runs OK at idle initially, but after running it on the road and experiencing the severe miss, it struggles to run at idle for about 1 minute, then the RPM picks up to normal and it idles clean again. The Check Engine indicator is NOT lit. Looking for suggestions.

My mechanic did a complete head gasket job and rebuilt my transmission. The car ran well for about five weeks. Then the car died while I was driving , luckly I was able to start it after numerous attempts . He then replaced the fuel pump saying it was shot and there was possibly water in my gas which he removed. The car still stalls and he now has the car in his garage where he still can’t figure out what is wrong.
It is a 1989 Volvo 240 wagon 4 cyl. Since I last posted the original message the problem has been located . There is apparently a damaged wire that is connected to the fuel pump along with a relating part. The car should be fixed as of this writing , the cost is $365.00 . I have had all of the other things mentioned checked. My exhaust is almost completely redone and the altenator checks out ok. I have found a nearby volvo repair person and will go there for a once over check up when I get the car back. Many thanks to all who responded.

You may need to think outside the box on this one…
My ’05 Subaru Impreza RS is revving slightly higher than it used to, and it’s experiencing some sort of sloshing sound at start up. This latter part is very brief, and only happens at start up. I’ve been to a lot of technicians about this, including two Subaru dealers in the upstate of SC. Nobody has been able to help yet.

The car runs without any problem. One day, I washed my 1988 Acura Integra’s engine (fuel injection) due to the dirt and grease on the engine, I used degreaser on the engine and then I use water hose to stream wash it . I have then thoroughly dried it with cloth and I left it overnight.
On the next day, when I try to start the engine, it would start. The engine is attempting to crank but fail. I can hear some kind of combustion like “explosion sound POM……POM……POM” from the exhaust pipe while I am igniting the engine. I checked the battery and seems OK.

I have a 2000 Suzuki esteem 4 door. Last week it was in a flood that rose right above the wheel/wheel well. Someone started my car and backed it out of the parking space that was flooded, but then it stalled and wouldn’t start. Had it towed home, let it dry for a week, still wouldn’t start.
We took out the spark plugs and water squirted out when we tried to turn it over. Tested the started, that is fine. Charged battery and the car started (rough at first). I took it IMMEDIATELY to get an oil change and transmission fluid changed.

Engine rotates but will not fully start. Battery replaced. Gas tank is 1/3 full. Oil and water levels are good. I’m concerned that engine oil may have dried from pistons, and dont want to cause any damage. What should my next step be?

1990 Baja with 454ci with electric pickup distributer. After it dies a turn of the key and it starts right up again. Will run again for awhile and than dies again. I checked the coil and it reads within the specs. There is know water in the fuel. It runs great with no missing or knocking untill it just dies. I did switch coils and coil wire to the distributer, but it didn’t help. It doesn’t seem to do this when running at idle 750rpm-1000rpm. The temperature is normal and oil pressure appears to be fine. I thought at one point that it could be starving for fuel, but the bronze elements are clean and after the engine stalls out, it starts right up again with the turn of the key.

My 2001 Celica GT runs great. Everytime I refuel however it stalls. If I keep the rpm’s up for a couple of minutes it will be fine again. The lower the gas level is when I refuel, the worse it stalls. I have tried fuel injector cleaner in the gas and also that stuff that dries up the water in your gas tank and neither works. It never did this before and I just returned from a year overseas and it was in storage that year but I had someone start it up at least once a month while I was there. What could be the problem?
