My 2001 (190,000 miles) 2500 cummins turbo diesel is blowing white smoke what could be causing this?

My truck runs as if it isnt getting gas fully and bogs out when rpms go up. I noticed that when i turned the key foward i couldnt hear my electric fuel pump turn on so i put in a new one. It then ran ok for a couple minutes and got back to running like crap and white smoke blows out now. I still can’t her the buzzing when i turn the key foward tho. Tomorrow im gonna try changing the fuel filter out and also see if theres water in the gas. I dnt now if it is that or possibly the injector pump going out again. I do have an antifreeze leak and have been using water for a little while now. Also ran out of gas a few days before the problems started. Sprayed some starter fluid into air filter and got it running. Do have some transmission problems. Dnt really know if any of these things could have caused this to happen. If anyone has experienced this problem or knows anything about it please let me know something cuz i dnt know what else to do.

Blowing white smoke usually means that coolant is leaking in the combustion chamber. Cracked gasket, cracked head, cracked something.

dirty fuel filter
dirty air filter
dirty fuel system

white smoke should not be confused with steam.white smoke is from burning atf,and id say it was impossible in your case.steam dissipates in the air smoke does not.on an older gas engine, id say your trans modulator went byby, but never a diesel, and these days the are shifted electronically.now that said, you may have lost the oil seal on the intake side of your turbo.sometimes itll leave tattletale oil streaks.with the bogging trouble your having, id say that might be your problem. have the turbo inspected by a good guy.itll be obvious, if that is the problem, on the intake side there will be a greasy film.if you can actually reach the intake fins, there will be oil build up on them.make sure it turns easily.

This happened on my brother’s 01 Dodge. The turbo has oil lines going from the engine to the turbo’s bearings to keep them lubricated, and there’s a seal in the bearing box that keeps it from sucking oil into the turbo blades. That seal failed and it was sucking engine oil out and injecting it into the combustion chambers. This caused it to run super rich and smoke. Also his engine oil level kept going down.

Change the filters first.

Hope U make a miss quote when U said gas as the diesel won’t run on gas. over fueling can cause white as it dilutes the oil. Water in the exhaust will cause white but will disappear in a few seconds fuel and oil will stay and smell.

water in the fuel will also cause this to happen so id try changing the filter on it and run some additives through it,in the winter time they will do this sometimes due to a condensation build up in the tank, good luck.

you need to get your head gasket replaced, whats happening is the coolant you noticed disappearing is going into the combustion chambers on the engine, and the engine is then trying to compress and burn the coolant that gets mixed in with the fuel. since water doesn’t compress it causes the engine to run poorly because the engine is using all its power just to try and run.the white smoke you see is the ethylene glycol thats left over from the evaporation of the water inside the cylinder. you should also check your fuel filter regularly even if nothing seems wrong,it can prevent potential problems early on.the starter fluid is a bad move. all the engine needs is to get its “prime” back and things will be fine. the starter fluid can actually cause internal damage to the engine, or make it what we call an “ether baby” and even on nice warm sunny days if exposed to too much ether, will need that ether to start. for your transmission check the fluid, if low or dirty, add fluid or get the tranny flushed with a new filter installed
