Leaky fuel pump or rusted fuel tank?

I have a 1996 Kia Sephia. The car has been sitting for about three years. We tried to get the car started by putting about $20 worth of gas in the car. It wouldn’t start. Turns out, the fuel pump was bad and needed to be replaced. Our mechanic said that the fuel tank had a lot of gas in it, so when he replaced the fuel pump, the fuel tank was overflowing. So basically, we had to run out all of the old gas to make sure the engine was okay. He also added a gas treatment because we mixed old and new gas. We drove the car up and down our neighborhood for about two weeks, burning gas. One night, we tried to start the car, and it would not start. A lot of gas shot out from underneath, and then the car started. We decided not to drive that night because of the gas smell, but the next morning, we started it again. It took a while to start, but once again, the gas began to leak out. The gas mainly shoots out when cranking the car, and then it leaks, sort of drips. I’m not really sure if it leaks while driving. My mechanic says that it’s leaking because the fuel tank is rusted. He says that since the car was sitting for so long, it rusted out. The problem I have with that is, upon picking up the car and driving it for those two weeks, the car did not leak anything. I’m no mechanic, but I believe the leak is in the new fuel pump line he installed. My mom believes he’s telling us the truth and she does not want to pay anyone else to find out for sure. Sure enough, the car was sitting for a long time, but it wasn’t sitting in a puddle of water. It was in my sister’s backyard, where the grass was practically bald underneath the car. So basically, what do you guys think? Rusted tank or fuel pump installed incorrectly? I’m trying to sell this car, so I’m trying to get the correct information. Please help.
Also, if the tank was so rusted as he says, wouldn’t gas leak from the car when it’s just sitting? Or does the pressure from it being cranked up, make it leak more noticeable?

The fuel pump is inside the gas tank and the leak you are experiencing
is a fuel line under the vehicle that leaks when fuel pressure is applied.
The hoses/lines become brittle with age. If the tank were leaking it would
do so with or without the car running.
A half empty gas tank will draw an abundance of moisture in a car sitting
in the back yard due to daily temperature changes, the fuel tank will load
up with water and make it almost impossible to clean out.

HI
You don’t say exactly where the gas is leaking from… If it is leaking anywhere but the tank its self then its not the tank.. I would more apt to think its a line or one of the rubber hoses that connect the tank to the fuel line. Does your mom want to spend $100.’s for a $10 repair. Get a second opinion or drive the car over something so you can look at it your self.. can’t be that hard to see if it’s the tank or just one of the lines. My $$ are on a line or rubber hose.
Good luck

if the pump was bad you would,nt be running up and down the road. you have hoses up on top of the tank that hooks to the pump, maybe 1 of those is bad and leaking. if you have a hose leaking then you will lose pressure up to the engine. i would be checking the hoses before getting into the pump.
