Good tires and proper alignment will help. Also taking it easy on the gas when accelorating and rolling down the windows instead of using the air conditioner will help.

The best way to get better gas mileage is to adjust your driving style rather than your car. Take corners with less brakes, try to drive at around 60 mph on the highway rather than 70mph, try to coast up to red lights rather than braking, and put the car in drive as soon as you start it. I watched a program about it on CNN, and some people experienced mileage increases of up to 20 mpg just by doing the things that I mentioned.

Forget all those “SAVE GAS” scams. This was on NBC morning TV show. The difference is as much as 38% (their claim). There are very simple rules to save gas:

(1) drive slow – not too much past 55
(2) accelerate slowly
(3) don’t brake unnecessarily
(4) use cruise control – whenever it is safe to do so.

Don’t coast – it is NOT safe (to coast in Nuetral) and it does NOT save gas. It only saves gas, if you are planning to slow down (exiting, tolls, traffic). Coasting then accelerating again is LESS efficient than just cruising.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic). That’s 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles). Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

WOW !!

Good Luck…

*Drive the speed limit, or below.
*Use a smaller tire. (Don’t buy 33″ super swampers)
*If you are going over 55 mph, it’s more fuel efficient to roll up the windows and use the a/c.
*Clean out your car and the trunk, don’t carry a bunch of junk around with you.
*Keep your tires properly inflated, and rotate regularly.
*Make sure the cap to your gas tank is tight, to prevent evaporation.
*Make sure all belts are in good condition.
*Make sure the timing is set correctly.

Keep your car maintained (tire pressure too), empty your car of un-needed junk, don’t stomp on the gas, don’t drive during rush hour, take the thruway/expressway whenever possible without going out of the way, don’t use the brakes (look ahead as far as you can! Your wasting gas when you speed up to stop lights), and plan your trips (don’t drive to the same part of town and back home four times in a day. If you can make it all in one round trip, do so)

Proper maintenance, follow the owners manual, correct tire pressure, drive with the windows up for less drag. Change your driving habits; avoid jackrabbit starts, cruise the speed limit, slow down with your foot off the gas prior to braking, turn off the AC if not needed. Consolidate your trips, drive to the farthest location first and work your way back if possible. Car pool to work, less driving means less wear and tear on your car, less gas used during the week.
