Fuel pump, regulator, water. or other???

I have a 97 Maxima that I love. But recently it started giving me trouble. I have a feeling it’s could be the fuel pump or regulator. But then again it can be something else. My car is stalling, a lot. It rides rough, but it drives as long as I am giving it gas. I place my hand near the exhaust pipe because it was blowing smoke and I was trying to find out if it was water vapor or other. My exhaust smells very rich in gas. When my car does stall, it usually will not start back up, almost like it’s flooded. Here the fun part, I can get it to start AFTER I pull out my fuel pump fuse for a few seconds, then it dies, probably due to no gas. However, after I put bad the fuse, it starts up again. Is it possible that he fuel regulator is sending too much fuel to the engine? Or is the fuel pump likely to blame. It just started last week, out of the blue. Any idea on what I should look for? Could it be my injectors? This one is kinda weird for me.

this is more than likely do to the choke positioning sensor not working correctly telling the car to give more fuel to the otor than needed if not then try computer it also regulates the fuel to the motor

Too much gas could very well be the regulator, generally when the pump is going you don’t hardly get any fuel, personally I would hook it up to a fuel pressure tester and see what the reading is ,you will probably need a Chilton’s manual to see what the specs should be.I don’t think the injectors are a problem. The other possible culprit is the throttle position sensor,Ive seen them cause similar problems.Good luck to you.

I agree that its the throttle pos. sensor. a few reasons here is that you said is was stalling alot and rides rough but drives as long as you are giving it gas. The pump wouldn’t change when you apply gas. The other thing is smelling of very rich in gas. Also you said you said it was blowing smoke by the exhaust. Another thing I would leave out is the O2 sensors.
Check the plugs how do they look? You can get an idea from the condition of the plugs. Do you have a Service Engine Soon light coming on?
