Can you add distilled water to E85 gas to get better gas mileage?

I have been told that the higher the octane level, the gas mileage is worse. If you have water in your tank on regular gas, it runs rough so you add STP or some fuel additive in order for it to mix with the water and burn such as alchohol. So why couldn’t you simply add distilled water to your tank on E85 to get better gas mileage. On my company car, they charted out the expense on E85 versus regular gas and it was just under $1000.00 more expensive to run the E85. E85 I think is 105 octane. I think if they were to lower the octane somehow, the consumer could see the benefit of using it more.

geez NO.. any of that will harm all sorts of parts in your car especially the motor…

E85 uses more energy to make than it puts out. It is causing poor countries to starve. Think twice before using E85.

In 36 months E85 will not exist.

I honestly don’t know the answer to your question, but I do have a though. Gasoline is lighter than water left sitting, the the gas should settle above the water. Since the gas tank is drained from the bottom, doesn’t that mean mostly water would be going to your engine.

E85 is 85 octane the reason it costs more to use is because of the power loss to the lower octane. DO NOT ADD WATER

The best mileage for any car is using the octane the manufacturer recommends for it. You see this especially with turbo-equipped cars.

Adding water would be a very expensive mistake to make.

I know this post is way old, but i thought i would clarify to Mark v.. E85 is NOT 85 octane. the 85 means 85% ethanol. E85 is actually about 108 octane. and that is a cold hard fact. mixing water in it will not do anything because water does not mix with an unlike density.
