Can I usge a water bottle to store 1 gallon of gasoline? Or will the gasoline eat through this?

The reason for this is because my gas gauge does not work. It happned after I went up into the mountains 4,000 ft and when I came home my gas guage went wakky.

At least I think it happened because of this it could have been its too old as my care is 23 years old.

So I want to store 1 gallon of gas in my car and use a 1 gallon water bottlle that seems to be pretty sturdy. I just want to make sure the gasoline will not eat through this plastic. thank you

It should not eat through it, although dont quote me on that. However it is illegal to store gasoline in a non approved container. It says that right there on the gas pumps. If you got pulled over or something and a cop saw that in your car, they could fine you.

Most gasoline containers are plastic, so a water bottle should work. However, there are laws about gasoline storage containers, because of the risk of fire. You need to have a legally approved container if you want to go to the gas station to fill it.

It definitely won’t eat through, but just be safe and get the smallest gas can there is, probably a 2.5 gallon, and keep it in the trunk.
Also, they sell emergency storage fuel cans at most auto stores. I’m not sure how much they hold, but they come with fuel already, for this purpose.

Only put gasoline in containers that are specifically made for gasoline.

Period.
