2006 Hyundai Elantra overfilled with gas?

I filled my car this morning. As I was filling I ran inside the station for a bottle of water. When I came out the pump didn’t stop, so my car overfilled.. I was able to drive 3-4miles to work, but upon leaving work my engine shut off. I called AAA for a tow. The tow truck driver had gotten my car to start again. He said it may be an air bubble. So I was able to drive to the other end of town for my 3k oil change. But with the air running I was able to still smell gas. Is this normal for me to smell gas? I cannot wait until Monday to have the dealership inspect my car, nor can my finances afford the $100 for a diagnostic at Pep Boys. Does it sound like something is wrong, or should I probably be fine?

Thanks and God bless.

Nothing to worry about, just make sure the gas cap is on tight (until it clicks)…the smell is just the extra fuel that is in the top of the filler pipe and the smell will go away after driving for a while..still not bad for a dealer inspection (hope it’s under warranty)

That’s why the sign on the pump says, “Do not leave unattended while pumping gas” Actually if it doesn’t shut off the excess just runs out on the ground. However the vent line to the tank could get filled and cause the problem but as you burn fuel and the tank level goes down, it should clear.

you will be just fine as long as you don’t park on any hills. drive the car for a day or two and the smell will go away.
with the tank so full, there is nowhere for the fumes to go but out.
when the gas builds up some fumes, it is usually recycled through the evap canister. it will be fine to drive.

probably go away soon and no need for anything else if it is running ok BUT DON’T SMOKE OR HAVE ANY FLAME AROUND IT till you can’t smell it. it’s never a good idea to leave the pump while fueling and also it is dangerous to use a cell phone while fueling, if it rings don,t answer and don’t call until the gas cap is secured. people have incurred serious burns from this
